Niagara ON:
The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Wednesday that Brianté Weber of the Hamilton Honey Badgers was named the CEBL Defensive Player of the Year in a vote cast by CEBL coaches, general managers, and media covering the CEBL Summer Series.
Weber earned the award over fellow finalist, Marcus Anderson of the Guelph Nighthawks. He will receive a custom-designed ring courtesy of CEBL’s award partner, Jostens.
The NBA veteran and dynamic guard out of Virginian Commonwealth University averaged 12.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 27.3 minutes in eight CEBL Summer Series games for Hamilton. He led the league in steals with a 2.50 per game average. His .481 field goal percentage was second best among Honey Badgers who attempted at least six shots per game.
This is Weber’s second CEBL Award in three days as he out-polled the Edmonton Stingers’ Xavier Moon (finalist for the CEBL Player Of The Year award), for the Clutch Player Of The Year honour on Monday. The award winner was determined through a vote of fans on the league’s social media channels.
During the Elam Ending of Hamilton’s quarterfinal playoff victory over Niagara, Weber contributed to eight of the team’s nine points, while recording two assists and sealing the 85-83 victory with a driving layup. He scored seven of Hamilton’s nine points during the Elam Ending of his team’s 102-96 victory over the Fraser Valley Bandits in a nationally-televised matchup on August 1. Weber scored the game winning field goal in the August 4 victory over Saskatchewan.
The CEBL Summer Series tipped off July 25 and became the first professional sports league in Canada to return to play since the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus in mid-March shut down sports across the country. The Edmonton Stingers became 2020 CEBL Champions on August 9 as they beat the Fraser Valley Bandits in the Championship final. The game was televised live nationally on CBC, the CBC Gem App and CBCSports.ca. It was available to over 130 million viewers internationally thanks to distribution agreements secured in Australia, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan by MEDIAPRO Canada, the international media rights and production partner of the CEBL. All Summer Series games were also livestreamed on Twitch.
A league created by Canadians for Canadians, the CEBL has the highest percentage of Canadian players of any professional league in the country, with 80% of its current rosters being Canadians. Players come from the NBA G-League, top international leagues, the Canadian National Team program, and top NCAA programs as well as from U SPORTS. The only First Division Professional League partner of Canada Basketball, the CEBL season typically runs from May through August. More information is available at www.cebl.ca
