Opening doubleheader on CBC and CBC Gem begins at 1:30 p.m. ET, featuring the Hamilton Honey Badgers versus Niagara River Lions, followed by the Ottawa BlackJacks versus the Guelph Nighthawks.

With only 10 days to tip-off on July 25, CBC Sports and the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) introduced the on-air talent Wednesday who will deliver all the excitement of Canada’s national professional basketball league to viewers across the country as part of the CEBL Summer Series.

Road to the Olympic Games host Andi Petrillo and former pro basketball player Jevohn Shepherd will host all seven TV games on CBC, live from the CBC Sports studio in downtown Toronto. Peter Ruttgaizer will handle the play-by-play, alongside Joe Raso will provide the in-game analysis from the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines, Ontario, the home of the single-site competition featuring all seven CEBL teams. Raptors 905 analyst Amy Audibert will serve as sideline reporter.

The seven broadcast games include the opening day doubleheader with the Hamilton Honey Badgers taking on the Niagara River Lions at 1:30 p.m. ET (10:30 am. PT), followed by the expansion Ottawa BlackJacks making their league debut against the Guelph Nighthawks. CBC will also broadcast a doubleheader Saturday, August 1 that will pit Hamilton against the Fraser Valley Bandits starting at 1:30 p.m. ET (10:30 a.m. PT), followed by the defending CEBL Champion Saskatchewan Rattlers battling the Edmonton Stingers. CBC will also broadcast both semifinal games the afternoon of Saturday, August 8, as well as the championship game at 12 noon ET (9 a.m. PT) on Sunday, August 9.

All 26 games of the CEBL Summer Series will be live streamed on the free CBC Gem streaming service, cbcsports.ca, and the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices. For the 19 games exclusive to the live stream the CEBL’s Jason Thom and Sean Woodley will split play-by-play duties. Raso and Shepherd will provide the colour commentary and Audibert will deliver the sideline coverage.

The CEBL will be the first professional sports league in Canada to return to play. Training camps open July 17 in advance of a round robin competition that will have each club play the other once. The team with the worst record will be eliminated and the remaining six will be seeded into a single elimination playoff bracket, culminating with the 2020 league championship game on August 9. The CEBL Summer Series replaces the 20-game schedule that had been scheduled to begin May 7 and conclude with the CEBL Championship Weekend in Edmonton, August 14-16.

MEDIAPRO Canada has been selected by the CEBL to produce live coverage of all 26 games, supplying all technical facilities, production crew, and transmission services. It will use eight cameras, including two netcams, to deliver live coverage of seven games, including the openers, the semi-finals and the final, for nationwide broadcast on CBC, and will also debut AutomaticTV, the MEDIAPRO Group’s proprietary AI-driven fully automated sports production system, to produce High Definition live multi-camera coverage of the 19 games for CBC Gem – marking the first time the unmanned technology has been used in Canada. MEDIAPRO Group produces live coverage of more than 12,000 events around the world each year through its 58 offices on four continents.

Dan Gladman, producer of the Toronto Raptors game broadcasts for 10 years, will serve in the same capacity for all 26 games of the CEBL Summer Series. Gladman is a Canadian Screen Award-winning producer who has covered the NBA and basketball in Canada for more than 20 years. He has produced some of the top names in basketball broadcasting in North America, including Matt Devlin, Leo Rautins, Jack Armstrong, Dan Shulman, Rod Black, Brad Fay and Sam Mitchell.

While staying in St. Catharines the teams will be separated from the general public, and strict screening and COVID-19 protocols will be adhered to under the supervision of medical officials. Extensive health and safety measures will be maintained for the participants, including social distancing and other specialized practices designed to limit interactions amongst participants.

A league created by Canadians for Canadians, the CEBL has the highest percentage of Canadian players of any professional sports league in the country, with 80% of its current rosters being Canadians. Players come from the NBA G-League, top international leagues, the Canadian National Team program, and top NCAA programs as well as from U SPORTS. The only First Division Professional League partner of Canada Basketball, the CEBL season typically runs from May through August. More information is available at www.cebl.ca.
