After playing in their first-ever Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) games, the Montréal Alliance and Scarborough Shooting Stars are still searching for their first-ever victory. One of those teams will make history on Sunday May 29 as Scarborough travels to play Montréal at 4 p.m. ET at the Verdun Auditorium.
Montréal went on the road to Hamilton and lost 80-72 on May 25 while a day later, Scarborough travelled to Guelph and lost to the Nighthawks 89-80.
Despite the losses, there were positives and notable performances from players on both teams.
Guards Alain Louis and Hernst Laroche of Montreal had a team-high four assists versus Hamilton. The Alliance received balanced scoring throughout the game, as all 10 players who saw playing time scored in the opener. Their two leading scorers were former Carleton Raven and Windsor Lancer Isiah Osborne and American guard Dominic Green. Green brings with him overseas experience having played in Germany and Slovakia the past two seasons. Hometown guard Kemy Osse – who has two previous years of CEBL experience – also added seven points and five rebounds. Forward Nathan Cayo made his presence known down low with a team-high seven boards. U SPORTS draft pick Marc-Andre Fortin from Laval notched five points, four rebounds and three assists in his CEBL debut. Centre Gaios Skordilis, one of the team’s international players, made an impact on defence with two steals and three blocks in just over 15 minutes.
Olu Famutimi and Kyle Alexander both played notable minutes for Scarborough against Guelph. Alexander logged a game-high 31.3 minutes, finishing with six points, two blocks and a team-high 14 rebounds. Alexander also brings with him NBA experience with the Miami Heat. Look for him to play a significant role against Montréal and in the games to come. A positive stat from their opener was the fact the Shooting Stars out-rebounded their opponent 53-43, including 14-10 on the offensive glass. The Shooting Stars also received contributions from former Hamilton Honey Badger Kalif Young who scored 12 points and nine rebounds in eighteen minutes played.
Two of Scarborough’s American players, forward Kameron Chatman and guard Jalen Harris led the team in scoring with 21 points. Harris showed his ability to score akin to his experience with the Toronto Raptors previously. One of the players who generated plenty of buzz from the crowd was guard Jermaine Cole, who scored his first CEBL points with a four-quarter three and will look to build on that as he gets familiar with CEBL’s style of play.
While the Shooting Stars did well on the glass against Guelph, two areas to improve on against Montréal will be their three-point shooting (24.2 percent) and free-throw shooting (57.1 percent).
Both teams were competitive in their first-ever CEBL games, against teams with previous years of experience. Now the two newcomers will face off against each other in a historic home opener in Montréal.
