Ottawa BlackJacks Sign Canadian Guard Tyrrel Tate

The Ottawa BlackJacks of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Wednesday that Canadian guard Tyrrel Tate has signed with the Club for the remainder of the2022 CEBL season.


A six-foot-five guard from Calgary, Alberta, Tate has averaged 9.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 22.4 minutes in 204 professional games in the CEBL, in Mexico, in the NBA G League and in Canada.


Tate will be competing in his third CEBL season, having played with the Fraser Valley Bandits during the inaugural year of the league in 2019 and with the Guelph Nighthawks during the 2020 CEBL Summer Series in St. Catharines. As a member of the Bandits, Tate averaged 13.9 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists in 19 games, making 17 starts. He recorded a double-double with a season-high 27 points and 10 rebounds on June 15 against Guelph.


The Fayetteville State University alumni spent the 2017-18 campaign with the Cleveland Charge of the NBA G League. He scored a season-high 11 points, hitting two triples coming off the bench on February 10 against the Windy City Bulls.


The Idaho Stampede (the Utah Jazz NBA G League affiliate) selected Tate as a seventh-round pick in the 2014 NBA Development League Draft. He played 25 games with the team in his first professional season and made five starts. He averaged 4.2 points and 2.8 rebounds, scored in the double-digits three times and dished two assists six times.


Collegiately, Tate played four years for the Broncos, averaging 15.3 points and 5.2 rebounds in 81 games. As a senior, he was selected as part of the All-CIAA Team and opened the season with 19-point contests on November 8 against Concord and the day after against Notre Dame College. He scored 30 or more points for the third time in his career with a 30-point game on November 21 against UNC Pembroke.


The Calgary, Alberta, native played high school basketball at Triangle powerhouse Millbrook High School in Millbrook, New York.


After completing the biggest Elam Ending comeback in CEBL history with a 14-point run to defeat the Scarborough Shooting Stars, 91-90, on Monday, the BlackJacks (3-7) will travel to Hamilton for their sixth game on the road on Friday at 4:00pm Eastern. Fans can watch the game live on CEBL+, on the CEBL App or on CBC Gem. The BlackJacks will return home on July 6 for their first matchup of the year against the Saskatchewan Rattlers.
