ST. JOHN’S, NL, March 4, 2022 – The Newfoundland Growlers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced today that the club has signed domestic guard Junior Cadougan for the upcoming 2022 CEBL season.

A six-foot-one guard from Toronto, Cadougan played for the Ottawa BlackJacks in 2021 under Growlers Head Coach & GM Patrick Ewing Jr., who previously served as Lead Assistant Coach for the BlackJacks.

Averaging 6.8 points, 2.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.1 steals per game in five starts and 15 total appearances for Ottawa last season, Cadougan joined the Edmonton Stingers for the FIBA Basketball Champions League Americas (BCLA) tournament this past December.

The 31-year-old has represented Team Canada on multiple occasions, most recently during the 2022 FIBA AmeriCup Qualifier in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where Canada swept the two-game series against the U.S. Virgin Islands. Cadougan also won a silver medal with Canada at the 2015 PanAmerican Games in his hometown of Toronto, where he averaged 3.8 points, 2.0 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 18.0 minutes in five games.

Cadougan has further experience in the CEBL on his CV, playing a pivotal role in the Fraser Valley Bandits run to the 2020 CEBL Summer Series final. Averaging 11.1 points (third on the team), 3.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists (tops with the team) and starting in all eight games for Fraser Valley in 2020, he put up a team-best 13 points and a game-high five assists during the Bandits’ championship game loss to Edmonton.

Local basketball fans will remember Cadougan fondly for his time with the St. John’s Edge of the NBLC where he averaged 13.6 points, 4 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 38 appearances across two seasons (2018-2020) with the club. Named the NBLC Most Improved Player in 2018-19, he followed that up with All-NBLC Second Team and All-Canadian First Team honours in his second and last season with St. John’s.

Prior to turning pro, Cadougan played four seasons with Marquette, advancing to the Sweet 16 at the NCAA Tournament three times and the Elite 8 once. Averaging 5.7 points, 1.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 23.2 minutes per game in 117 appearances for the Golden Eagles, he was named to the 2012-13 BIG EAST All-Academic Team and sat sixth on the all-time list in wins (97) and eighth all-time in assists (435) for Marquette upon finishing his collegiate career.

Cadougan is the first player to sign with Newfoundland ahead of the upcoming 2022 season.
