The Newfoundland Growlers of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced today that the club has signed Canadian guard Terry Thomas for the upcoming 2022 CEBL season.
A six-foot-four guard from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Thomas is currently suiting up in the NBLC with the London Lightning, where he was recently named Canadian Player of the Week to open the month of March. In four appearances this season, the 30-year-old is averaging 17.5 points, 8.3 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game for London.
Thomas has previous CEBL experience with a pair of teams in the league, most recently as a member of the Guelph Nighthawks in 2021, where he put up 7.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in seven contests. In the inaugural 2019 CEBL season, he averaged 11.9 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.1 assists in seven games for the Saskatchewan Rattlers.
Local basketball fans will remember Thomas from his days playing with the Moncton Magic and Halifax Hurricanes, where he regularly faced off against the St. John’s Edge in NBLC play. Across his six seasons in that competition, Thomas has been named NBLC Canadian Player of the Year, First Team All-NBL Canada and First Team All-NBLC Defense once each, earning all three accolades back in 2016-17.
On top of an established domestic track record, Thomas has also played overseas, kickstarting his professional career with the Hamburg Towers of the German Pro-A league, averaging 13.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game in Hamburg. Since then, he’s made further stops abroad in Finland, Venezuela, and Chile, each of those three opportunities coming in the past calendar year.
Prior to turning pro, Thomas played for both St. Francis of Xavier and the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees in the CIS (now U SPORTS), earning OUA Second Team All-Star honours in his last season in the nation’s capital back in 2013-14.
Thomas is the second player to sign with Newfoundland ahead of the upcoming 2022 season.
