Canadian Elite Basketball League Announces 2021 Playoff Schedule

        With tip-off of its third season coming Thursday, the Canadian Elite Basketball League announced Monday that Edmonton, home of the 2020 CEBL champion Edmonton Stingers, will host the 2021 CEBL Championship Weekend from August 18–22 at the Edmonton Expo Centre. In Monday’s announcement the league also unveiled its playoff schedule, which will begin August 14. 

The team with the best regular season record will join host Edmonton with automatic berths into the four-team Championship Weekend. The next four teams in the standings will play quarterfinal games at 4 p.m. ET on August 14 and August 15 to determine which two will advance to the semifinals being held August 20 at the Expo Centre. The first semifinal is at 7 p.m. ET followed by the second semifinal starting at 9:30 p.m. ET. The Championship Finals game is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET on August 22.

All playoff games will be broadcasted nationally on CBC TV and available for live streaming on the CEBL’s new OTT streaming service CEBL+, cbcsports.ca, the free CBC Gem streaming service, the CBC Sports App for iOS and android devices, and on Twitch. 

Championship Weekend will be a five-day event hosted in partnership with the Expo Centre, City of Edmonton and Province of Alberta. It will feature the annual CEBL Awards event, a family friendly street-festival, tailgate parties, major concerts featuring top artists, a 3x3 Basketball tournament organized by EYBA, an NBA 2k gaming tournament, and the top four CEBL teams competing to be named CEBL champions. The 2021 CEBL season begins Thursday at 7 p.m. ET in the nation’s capital as the Ottawa BlackJacks host the Niagara River Lions at TD Place. The Hamilton Honey Badgers take on the defending CEBL champion Stingers in Edmonton on June 26 at 2 p.m. MT (4 p.m. ET) in a game that will be nationally televised on CBC. Fraser Valley hosts  Saskatchewan that evening to complete the season’s opening weekend of action. 

A league created by Canadians for Canadians, the CEBL has the highest percentage of Canadian players of any professional league in the country, with 75 percent of its current rosters being Canadians. Players bring experience from the NBA, NBA G League, top international leagues, the Canadian National team program, and top NCAA programs as well as U SPORTS. The only First Division Professional League Partner of Canada Basketball, the CEBL season typically runs from May through August.
