The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) is preparing to enter its fourth season as it becomes the largest professional sports league in Canada to play with 10 teams across the country. All teams begin training camp during the next two weeks as the season tips off Wednesday, May 25.

A record 165 players will take part in CEBL training camps, of which a record 118 are Canadian. 2022 training camp rosters also include a plethora of returning CEBL talent, and former USPORTS athletes. Here are some notable highlights:

  • 118 Canadian players (71% of all players)
  • 58 players in total will be returning to the CEBL
  • 63 players have played in U SPORTS programs previously
  • 32 players have been a part of the Canadian Senior Men’s National Team

The composition of training camp rosters also revealed that the CEBL continues to become a popular destination for players who carry experience in some of the world’s top collegiate and professional basketball leagues:

  • The league welcomes a record 107 new players (65% of all players)
  • 6 Players have NBA experience
  • A record 37 players have played in the NBA G League
  • 104 players come from NCAA Division I schools
  • 93 CEBL players who signed during free agency have professional experience playing overseas

The league announced earlier this year that each team must allocate at least one spot on its 10-man active roster to what will be known as an International Player - a non-American import. As a result, 12 non-American imports were signed during free agency:

“Our team rosters indicate that the CEBL has quickly become one of the top destinations for incredible worldwide talent,” said Mike Morreale, CEO & Commissioner, CEBL. “Without a doubt this will be our most competitive and exciting season yet as we bring elite level basketball to our fans from coast to coast. I can’t wait to see the competition on the court starting May 25.”

The CEBL has graduated five players into an NBA roster in the past five months including Xavier Moon, Edmonton Stingers (10 games played for the Los Angeles Clippers), Javin DeLaurier, Niagara River Lions (one game played for the Milwaukee), Cat Barber (three games played for Atlanta), Xavier Sneed (two games played for Memphis and nine games played for Utah) and Lindell Wigginton, Hamilton Honey Badgers (19 games played for Milwaukee).

The CEBL begins its fourth season on May 25. Tickets to all games are available now at CEBL.ca/tickets. All games will be streamed live internationally on CEBL’s OTT platform, CEBL+ . Games will also be available to stream live in Canada via cbcsports.ca , the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices, and the free CBC Gem streaming service.

A league created by Canadians for Canadians, the CEBL has the highest percentage of Canadian players of any professional league in the country, with 71 percent of its current rosters being Canadians. Players bring experience from the NBA, NBA G League, top international leagues, the Canadian National team program, and top NCAA programs as well as U SPORTS. The only First Division Professional League Partner of Canada Basketball, the CEBL season runs from May through August.
