Niagara ON:
The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Wednesday that Xavier Moon of the Edmonton Stingers is the winner of the CEBL Player Of The Year award in a vote cast by CEBL coaches, general managers, and media covering the CEBL Summer Series.
The 6-foot-2 guard from Goodwater, Alabama, played all eight games in the CEBL Summer Series, averaging 19.5 points, 4.5 assists, 4.0 rebounds, 1.8 steals, and 33.1 minutes while leading the Stingers to the 2020 championship. He led the league in points scored (156), assists per game (4.5), and 3-point percentage (.500). His 19.5 points per game was best in the league among players who played at least six games in the Summer Series.
Earning the honour over fellow award finalist and teammate Jordan Baker, Moon receives this honour for the second year in a row. The All-CEBL First team player will receive a customized ring from Jostens for his 2020 CEBL Player Of The Year honour.
The CEBL Summer Series tipped off July 25 and became the first professional sports league in Canada to return to play since the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus in mid-March shut down sports across the country. Games were televised live nationally on CBC, the CBC Gem App, and on cbcports.ca. They were carried to more than 130 million people internationally thanks to distribution agreements secured in Australia, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, and Taiwan by MEDIAPRO Canada, the international media rights and production partner of the CEBL. All Summer Series games were also livestreamed on Twitch.
A league created by Canadians for Canadians, the CEBL has the highest percentage of Canadian players of any professional league in the country, with 80% of its current rosters being Canadians. Players come from the NBA G-League, top international leagues, the Canadian National Team program, and top NCAA programs as well as from U SPORTS. The only First Division Professional League partner of Canada Basketball, the CEBL season typically runs from May through August. More information is available at www.cebl.ca
