CALGARY, AB – The Calgary Surge have signed six-foot-four guard Kyler Edwards for their 2023 inaugural season, the team announced Friday.
Edwards most recently played for the Motor City Cruise of the National Basketball Association (NBA) G-League where he averaged 12.0 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.1 assists in 25 games played.
“We are beyond thrilled to have a player of Kyler’s calibre. He is a big-time shot-maker that can score in different ways. He is also able to facilitate a team’s offense and make plays for his teammates. He’s a winner and that is extremely important for the culture we are trying to build,” said Surge General Manager, Shane James.
The Arlington, Texas native spent his entire National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) career in his home state. In his first three college seasons, the guard played for the Texas Tech Red Raiders before transferring to the University of Houston Cougars for his senior year. He started all 37 games and averaged 13.8 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. He also led the Cougars to an Elite Eight berth that year.
“I am beyond excited to be here in Calgary. This will be my first time playing in Canada and I cannot wait to experience it all. I am ready to get to work and bring a championship to the city,” said Edwards.
Before transferring to the University of Houston, he was anchor of Texas Tech’s defense. In his sophomore and junior seasons for the Red Raiders, he consistently averaged 11.4 points in the 2019-20 season and 10.1 points in the 2020-21 season.
As a freshman, Edwards was a key member of Texas Tech’s historic run to the Final Four and the national championship game. He averaged 5.8 points in six NCAA tournament games in 2019, including 12 points off the bench in the championship game.
About the Calgary Surge
The Calgary franchise originated as the Guelph Nighthawks in 2018, one of the six founding members of the CEBL. The organization was relocated from the league’s smallest market to Calgary in August 2022 as part of the growing league's business strategy to have teams in Canada’s largest metropolitan areas. Chairman Usman Tahir Jutt and Vice-Chairman and President Jason Ribeiro saw an opportunity to bridge Calgary’s diverse communities together through sport and entertainment and to create a sense of belonging.
